"Old" Songs

There is just something about old songs that captivates me. They make me feel nostalgic of an unknown time, the "good old days", if you will. They touch my heart in such a way that no song of my generation can, sometimes bringing a graceful melody, other times carrying deep melancholy. Perhaps everything is dust in the wind, but not some songs. Old songs.

Just to be clear, by old songs, I mean songs before the 2000s. There isn't a clear point in time when I would consider a song new instead of old, but that might be the period when music starts to feel different. I don't know. Maybe I should have moved the threshold further back to the 80s or 90s.

I do not follow a certain artist or band. I just pick songs that are soothing to my ear. Mostly inspired by my dad, who played a lot of old songs on the radio and as lullabies when I was small. Without him, I might have a rather different perspective on old songs...unless if one were to prove that older songs are innately better, but we are getting off topic here.

Here is a short list of my favourites. I deliberately chose songs from different artists to show the extent of my taste.

  • Dust in the Wind, Kansas
  • Here, There and Everywhere, The Beatles
  • In the Morning, Bee Gees
  • Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen
  • Blowin' In the Wind, Bob Dylan
  • American Pie, Don McLean
  • Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Elton John
  • Tell Laura I Love Her, Ray Peterson
  • Diary, Bread

Old songs do not need heavy beats or rapid lyrics. They do not need to be played in a atmosphere full of stimulants (I mean lasers in raves, not drugs). They do not glorify gang culture or sing of sex. That is the difference.

At least not the old songs I listen to. I would invite you to take a trip down memory lane and listen to them.
